TAX AND ACCOUNTING SERVICES

Tax season has officially begun.
As a reminder to our visitors, schedule your
appointment early! With the new rules regulating tax preparers, many will discontinue preparing returns and put and extra burden on full-time tax and accounting firms. Also, if you have kids attending college in the coming months and need their FAFSA's completed early, call us right away. And, just like in the past, we will complete the FAFSA Worksheet for you to reduce the chance of your application being rejected.

Landlord and business owners:
Be aware that you have until January 31st to remit 1099's to individuals and others with whom you have contracted services. If you haven't already done so, now is the time to obtain the required EIN's and mailing addresses for the recipients. Failure to file penalties have increased since last year, so don't risk paying more in penalties than you did for the service.

GovernmentThe IRS is looking for ways to increase revenues without raising taxes. So if you're thinking about trimming costs by short-changing the government, think again. Many small businesses are miss-classifying workers as contractors and not employees. You should ask your CPA to before you decide. There is no amnesty, so, if detected by an audit, you could end up with a big bill with penalties and interest tact on.
What can I do to reduce the cost of preparing my tax return? Here's a few hints.
1
Schedule your appointment early. Often times accountants are less busy in January and will cut you a deal
2
Get your documents organized. If your accountant provides an organizer, use it. And collate the documents with the organizer to save time.
3
Use a web portal and electronic organizer, if available. Hi-tech accounting firms work "in the clouds" and use technology that will save you time and money. Through the use of optical character recognition, (OCR), data entry is eliminated and accuracy is improved.
4
If you decide to make an office visit, make sure you're on and prepared. Although it's been along time since you've seen your accountant, limit your visit and stop by the office in the summer. Not only will you save on your fee, but you might get some good planning time in the off-season.
5
When you find a good accountant, tell others. Accountants who receive referrals remember where they came from.
